On the other hand, this also applies in the literal sense. Healthy skin radiates health and wellbeing. You can actually tell how you are on your skin; health problems show up on the surface.
It is not only because of this visibility that skin diseases and problems can be quite stressful for those affected. “People with a skin disease often suffer a lot from the stigma associated with it,” explains the dermatologist Tatiana von Bayern from dermatology at the Schlosspalais in Munich. Therefore, it is important that you know what skin problems you are prone to and what you can do about them. Here we show you which 8 skin diseases you should know about and how to avoid them.
Why do you get a skin disease?
Every skin is different. Depending on your skin type, personal habits or living conditions, your skin is more prone to certain skin diseases. Either the cause is genetic or the complexion changes when something else in life changes, be it the seasons, the hormones, the diet or even stress.
But wrong care routines or an unhealthy diet can also cause problems for your skin. Depending on your genetic predisposition, your skin will overreact and you will get pimples or itchy areas on your body, for example.
What skin diseases are there?
“Most skin diseases are relapses of a chronic, genetically predisposed skin problem,” explains dermatologist Eva Bachmeier from the dermatology department at Sendlinger Tor in Munich. “Infectious skin diseases, on the other hand, are rather rare.” According to both dermatologists, these 8 skin diseases are the most common:

In this predisposed skin disease, the sebum in the skin cannot drain properly through the pores because they are clogged or horny. This leads to the reddish sores and purulent pimples that are difficult to hide on the face. The conspicuous skin texture can be very stressful for those affected.
How to recognize acne: Even as a teenager you saw what acne looks like in the schoolyard: red spots on your face, purulent pimples and blemished skin. Not only is this painful, but it can also leave scars that are hard to get away from.
Here’s what you can do against acne: Wash your face regularly with a washing lotion with a low pH value and exfoliate regularly, for example with a fruit acid peel. Then the pores are cleaned and bacteria, which can cause inflammation, no longer feel comfortable on your skin.
“The redness can also be treated with a laser and made less noticeable,” explains von Bayern. If you have acne as an adult, you should have your sex hormones checked, which affect sebum production and an imbalance can cause acne.
This is what you should avoid with acne: Stay away from greasy creams! “It is best to use a gel with glycerine and no additives or fragrances for daily care,” advises the expert. Also, do not try to open or squeeze the pustules yourself, this can cause painful inflammation and scars.
Also, try avoiding dairy products for a while. “Milk contains hormones that can affect the skin,” explains the dermatologist. Avoid dairy products for about three months and see if your skin texture improves. Drinks or foods high in carbohydrates, and especially sweets, can also make pimples worse.
If your skin isn’t too oily, as it is with acne, but rather dry, flaky and prone to itching, you may have atopic dermatitis. “Especially in the change to the cold season, in stressful phases of life, but also through certain foods, a flare-up of this disease can occur”, says Tatiana von Bayern. The skin barrier is defective in the affected people. As a result, moisture is lost, the skin becomes dry and allergens can penetrate the skin. Allergy sufferers in particular often have such problems.
How to recognize atopic dermatitis: Atopic dermatitis can appear anywhere on the body; the elbows and the hollow of the knees are typically particularly affected. Here the skin begins to itch, becomes red and flaky. Those affected also have dry skin all over their bodies.
Here’s what you can do against atopic dermatitis: The most important thing is consistent basic care of the entire skin, preferably with as few additives as possible. “Care products with glycerine and urea support the natural skin barrier”, explains the dermatologist. To reduce inflammation, you can also apply natural supplements such as calendula, chamomile, or pansy to the eczema. In worse cases, your doctor may prescribe cortisone or tacrolimus. Also, drink enough to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.
You should avoid this with neurodermatitis: You should take special care of your skin, especially in winter, because cold, heated air or showering that is too hot dry out the skin. “Many of our patients also get atopic dermatitis relapses in phases in which they are under a lot of stress,” reports von Bayern. Relaxation exercises such as yoga or autogenic training can therefore also be useful.
3. Perioral dermatitis
For a long time, the so-called “stewardess disease” (yes, a sh *** name) as a result of overcare of the facial skin, especially in women. “That is now out of date,” explains Bachmeier. “Men and children can get this problem too, and they usually don’t care for their skin as intensively as many women.” Nevertheless, a connection with care products is possible.
This is how you recognize perioral dermatitis: “Typical of perioral dermatitis in women is the reddened skin around the mouth and nose, while a clear edge can be seen directly around the lips,” explains von Bayern. In addition, small, painful pimples can appear that do not heal on their own like normal pimples and sometimes last for months.
Here’s what you can do against perioral dermatitis: Less is more here too. Therefore, you should try a “zero therapy” and completely avoid all creams, soaps or other care products so that your skin can recover. “For some women, doing without it completely can solve the skin problem,” says von Bayern.
